Why Reading Matters
Reading and literacy is about so much more than just test scores or statistics. It’s about quality of life.
When our children read with confidence, joy, and critical thinking, it impacts every corner of our community. It leads to better jobs, stronger families, and a more engaged, empathetic Oshkosh. A love of reading changes lives and uplifts us all.
“Schools cannot address literacy alone. When we create a culture of reading together, we’re not just giving kids books—we’re giving them hope, confidence, connection, and brighter futures.”
- Trina Woldt, Co-Founder of Read More Oshkosh and Director of Leadership Oshkosh
A Stronger Oshkosh Starts with Strong Readers
When more of us read, we build a more informed, empathetic, and connected Oshkosh. Here are just a few of the benefits of reading:
Cognitive Development
Vocabulary and language skills
Exposure to new words and diverse ideas improves how we speak, write, and connect with others.
Critical thinking and comprehension
Reading often challenges us to ask questions, analyze, and see the bigger picture. These are skills that serve us in every home, classroom, and career.
Focus and concentration
In a world where we’re all constantly scrolling and skimming, reading helps grow our attention span, patience, and focus.
Emotional Development
Empathy
Reading opens our hearts, teaching us compassion and understanding for people of different backgrounds.
Self-awareness
Stories help us to name and process our own emotions, goals, and experiences.
Stress relief
Research shows that even ten quiet minutes with a good book can lower heart rate and ease tension. This is much needed as we deal with increasing mental health issues in teens and young adults.
Social & Cultural Awareness
Understanding history and society
Books preserve the voices and values that shape our community and beyond.
Thoughtful conversation
Frequent readers tend to listen more attentively, speak with greater clarity, and engage more deeply in the community.
Lifelong learning
Each page you read is fuel for curiosity, creativity, and civic engagement.
Career & Economic Empowerment
Career growth opportunities
Reading creates pathways to higher education, career opportunities, and personal fulfillment.
Entrepreneurship and invention
Reading can help nurture imagination and creativity, which inspires new ideas and innovations right here in Oshkosh.
Advocacy skills
Strong literacy skills give readers of all ages the voice and confidence they need to advocate for themselves and others throughout their career and community.
“Those who will sit in the seats of leadership tomorrow are sitting in classrooms and their parents' living rooms today. Making sure those future leaders have the ability to read, research, and reason responsibly is why the Read More campaign is so important."
- Darryl Eschete, Oshkosh Public Library Director
Let’s Rewrite the Story Together
When children see adults joyfully reading as part of their daily routine, they are more likely to do the same. Research shows that when an adult reads with a child for just 10 minutes a day, it can have a measurable, positive impact on that child’s literacy development.
With that in mind, Read More Oshkosh is a community-wide initiative working to build a culture of literacy that supports every child in Oshkosh. Together, we can change the story of literacy here in our community.
Every book read, every story shared, and every minute spent reading aloud helps build a brighter future for our kids and our community.
